Energy Tax Credits for Energy Efficient Windows

If you have decided to purchase energy efficient windows, skylights, or storm windows for your home then you may qualify for a windows tax credit, of up to $200.00. A credit is different than a deduction, a tax deduction will reduce the amount of income subject to tax, a tax credit reduces the tax itself and may increase the amount of your federal tax refund.

Exterior Windows & Skylights

New energy efficient windows and skylights must be energy star certified or meet the International energy conservation code (IECC) to qualify for the window tax credit. Only the price of the windows can be deducted. You may not include installation costs. Remember to save your receipt on these items as well as the energy star labels from your windows. You are eligible to receive 10% of your cost up to $200.00 for exterior windows and skylights.

Storm Windows

Energy efficient storm windows must meet the IECC as well as the exterior window installed in conjunction with the storm window. You must have a manufacturer certification statement to claim the window tax credit for storm windows. Do not include installation expenses. You are eligible to receive 10% of your cost up to $200.00 for storm windows.

Exterior windows, skylights, and storm windows must be installed on the taxpayerʼs principal residence. The maximum tax credit that can be claimed in one year for energy efficient windows is $500.00 which will also include any other energy improvements such as doors, central air and metal roofs.

You may want to consider installing numerous energy efficient improvements in separate tax years to get the most benefit. To claim these energy credits you must use the IRS form 5695. You may obtain this form for free at an online tax software service such as TurboTax online.

Energy Tax Credits 2011

The 30% energy tax credit unfortunately goes back to 10% after 2011 for the cost of energy saving home improvements. So, get busy improving your home now to claim the 30% before 2011 ends.

I purchased $7000 for heating and central a/c thinking I would get $1500 rebate. Just found out that my low tax liability on a small pension limits my energy credit at $473. Very disappointed.

You have to make good money to get the full energy credit, which doesn't sound equitable.

I purchased $10,000 worth of windows thinking I would get $1500 rebate. My accountant said it was based on my income so I only received $473. Very disapointed.

MrsConfused - you should have some paperwork from your contractor like an affidavit of completion or at least a sign off of work that is dated. Most installers need these signed off by the homeowner in order to get paid (if 3rd party window install) and for the warranty to work. No paperwork needed to do before Jan 1 2011.

Lowes, Home Depot, and Pella Corp. all have told me that it takes purchase AND install by end of 2010 to qualify. I had a contractor get appendicitis and finish a couple days late, but we all agreed to sign everything for 2010.

I file taxes electronically, so keep all these receipts, etc. The form, even via TurboTax, etc. is IRS Form 5695 that gets electronically processed. I did some credits in 2009 and a hybrid car in 2008 and really the paperwork is minimal - I really doubt that there would be an IRS inspection at your house.

Does anyone know other then keeping all your NFRC label and sales receipt of your andersen windows, if we are installing them ourselves, how do they know we also installed them before Jan 2011? Is there any paperwork that we will need to do before Jan 2011? Or do we just submit everything when we do our taxes?

Guest 13 months ago

You can go back and ammend and get your 2009 credit as long as you do it before April 15, 2012, I think. I already helped my brother-in-law do this.

Guest 14 months ago

All Energy Tax Qualified windows & doors must be installed by December 31, 2010. However, they have given about a week or so in Jan. to finish up jobs do to weather issues. Also note that because the tax credit is over in december you can still get the tax credit as long as you (customer) date your check for december 2010 and all the paperwork that you receive from your contractor is dated 2010. I mean technically all the windows that have contracts before December 31, 2010 should qualify.

To Jon NY,

I believe the ruleing is when the windows are placed in service (installed). So, windows installed in 2009 should be eligible.

Karl 14 months ago

Both purchased and installed

Eric 14 months ago

Does anybody know if energy efficiency windows need to be purchased or installed during 2010 to qualify for such tax credit??

Dan 15 months ago

I'm not an accountant but I believe you should be able to as long as you have proof they were installed in 2009.

Ashley 15 months ago

Does anyone know if you can amend your 2009 taxes to get the tax refund now?

Mark, I have not seen anything to support turbo tax's statement. If anyone has, please let me know. The non-retroactivity of the federal tax credit may not seem fair but keep in mind the purpose of it. The purpose is to pump new money into the economy and to promote new energy efficient home improvements. Every person that gets the credit is reducing the amount of tax revenue our government has to fund public projects, the military, etc. So it does not make any sense to give the credit to someone that did something good in the past because it will do nothing to stimulate our economy or make our country more energy efficient. I'm not saying I think it is fair if you purchased your windows in 2008 in reliance on the tax credit but if you were misled by a retailer I would think your recourse is against them. My two cents.

I have been told that turbo 2010 turbo tax is saying you can claim your 2008 energy window cost Up to 1200 dollars, does anyone know if this is true

where is my 2008 window tax credit 22 months ago

This makes no sense. I just don't get it. We spend so much money on windows thinking something would come out of it. I don't understand why they do amend this.

Jamie 23 months ago

The people who bought houses in 07 and 08 were the same idiots taking these stupid loans and buying homes they can afford. That caused all the forclosures and pressure on the economy. This is a STIMULUS measure. Look up what that means? They are offering this now to encourage people to pump money into the economy and on their homes. I'm sure people 10 years ago would have liked it as well. I work with a woman who missed the home credit by 1 day. It sucks but thats how the cookie crumbles. There are credits for a lot of things. Take advantage of it for something else.

I purchased my windows in 2008 but didn't install them until 2009. Anyhow I'm not gonna risk getting audited. :(

tiger 2 years ago

what i dont get is that the goverment is helping with a credit $8000 for people that are buying a house I bought my house in december of 2007 I wont get that credit and that's when houses where costly in the year 2006 & 2007 now new home owners are buying cheaper houses and paying less taxes and getting $8000 back on their taxes. What makes me upset is that the people that really needed the help where the people that bought their house when the market was high and paid a higher price for them and higher taxes. that's going to be a problem people are getting angry and not making their payment's because of the dum laws the goverment is making

SO...WHAT IF I CLAIM THE WINDOWS THAT I HAD INSTALLED IN 2008 ON MY 2009 TAXES??? HOW HIGHLY IS IT THAT I GET AUDITED AND ACTUALLY HAVE TO SHOW A RECEIPT???

Chris 2 years ago

Does anyone know of a petiton, or any other way to try to make this retroactive for 2008?

Teri 2 years ago

sorry, for the URL in my previous post

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-news/n-09-53.pdf

Teri 2 years ago

Go to the following URL to get the IRS guidance document. See Page 7, 8 and 9 for windows and doors. It clearly states both ratings must be .30 or less. However, this is absolutely not clear in the basic IRS documentation. In fact, the 5695 form itself IS STILL IN DRAFT FORM and you must thoroughly scour their website to even find the draft version. Pretty crappy all the way around if you ask me.

So funny, 2 yrs too early for $8,000 new home stimulus, and 1 yr to early for energystar window rebate. LOVE IT

Tracy 2 years ago

I agree Wayne! I had mine installed in Nov 08. To make matters worse, someone just shot a BB gun hole in my window and I have to have the whole bottom portion replaced. Anyone know of a petition, or some form letter?? I'm more than annoyed.

kathy 2 years ago

I also replaced all my windows and doors in my home .Had sunroom torn down and replaced with deck.Sunroom was losing a lot of our heat.To me this should also qualify for rebate.When you replace and repair something that is causing heat loss.We did not put sunroom up,it was done by previous owners.All toll our expense has been in the area of 40,000.00.Not counting new heater system that cost over 10,000.00.We need better laws for the deserving citizens.;

Wayne 2 years ago

So has anyone seen efforts to have 2008 retroactive to 2009 tax year? How does one go about petitioning a request for consideration? Does this go through a congressperson?

Fred 2 years ago

That's really unfortunate for many of us that the government didn't elect to make the credit retroactive for people who installed them in 2008. Doesn't make sense.

John brooks 2 years ago

Yes home depot does have windows that qualify the andersen 200 series with Low-e finelite grills and the 400 series with low-e4 all qualify. Also the feather river fiberglass doors qualify also

Paul C 2 years ago

I just recently read the fine print to getting the tax deductions: below a 0.30 U Factor and 0.30 SHGC. I looked at all the windows at Home Depot and could not find any that met these requirements. Just because a window has an Energy Star label does not mean in necessarily qualifies for a tax credit. Has anyone found windows that qualify?

Blake 2 years ago

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (2009 Stimulus Bill) gives homeowners a $1,500 Tax Credit for Installing New Energy Efficient Replacement Windows and Doors in their homes. Requirements - Tax Credit Only for Replacement Windows. New Replacement Windows MUST have a 0.30 U-Factor(Value) or less AND a 0.30 SHGC to qualify. Energy Star is NO LONGER the Requirement for vinyl replacement windows.Tax Credit is 30% of cost to replace windows up to $1500.Most Windows WILL NOT QUALIFY for this $1,500 Tax Credit. Aluminum and Aluminum Clad windows probably will not qualify. Some Vinyl Replacement Windows Will Qualify. Some Vinyl Replacement Windows Will NOT Qualify. Check NFRC Stickers to make sure vinyl replacement windows qualify. Homeowners must keep records that the vinyl windows meet the requirements. IRS will have forms for homeowners for tax credit. This Replaces the $500 tax credit for 2009*.

Beth 2 years ago

Hey everbody, the people that sold the windows were told yes they were renewing the credit for 08, then they didn't get it signed in time, so they decided to put it off until 09 and start up again and now they have gone and changed that. This is on the gov web sites that all these changes occurred in 08 and 09. Your poor salesmen are doing their best, but everybody keeps changing the rules on them.

Jan 2 years ago

Ditto--me too! I purchased new windows in 2008 and cannot receive any tax credit. It is not fair!

Ben S 2 years ago

Lee, Tammy - me too! $5,000 in 2008. Definitely not fair.

Tammy B. 2 years ago

I also installed new energy efficient windows in July of 2008 and also was told that I could write these off an income tax time. I also just found out that I cannot. This is not fair at all! Is there anything I can do?

thanks, tammy

lee paige 2 years ago

my wife and i had $12,500 worth of energy efficent windows in june of 2008. we were told we would be able to write these off come tax time. well, our tax account just told us that we could not because the law for this was not"updated" for 2008. is this not fair? is there anything i can do about this? thanks again lee paige

Can I verify the .30/.30 requirements? Can't find in any language searched for.

Blake 2 years ago

NEW 2009 Stimulus Bill Tax Credit for Replacement Windows

RESTRICTIONS TO TAX CREDIT

Windows ONLY Qualify for the 30% Tax Credit up to $1500 if the windows are equal to or below a 0.30 U Factor and 0.30 SHGC If the window DO NOT meet these requirements and the homeowner will not get the Tax Credit. Homeowners need to spend more money for these types of energy efficient windows. Energy Star requirements do not apply for this Tax Credit. Window dealers need to read the actual stimulus bill. Most windows sold today will not meet these requirements.
