Where is My Government Tax Rebate Check?

There could be many reasons why you either received a smaller than expected rebate check or you did not receive one at all. Here is a list of possibilities for the missing payment:

• Your address was incorrect. This can be easily updated through the IRS and another check will be issued.

• Delinquent taxes, child support, or student loans. This stimulus payment will first be applied to these accounts and you will receive a letter stating how the funds were applied.

• You did not file a return. Itʼs not too late; you may file a 2008 return and receive a rebate recovery credit.

• Your bank account changed. If you changed your bank account then your check should have been mailed. Be sure to keep your address updated with the IRS.

Under normal circumstances you will receive your rebate check in the same manner that you receive your annual tax return. If you normally receive your return in the mail then you can expect your rebate check in the mail as well. If you have requested your return by direct deposit then this payment should also be direct deposited. There is one exception to this.

If you have recently used tax preparation software then your check will be mailed automatically and will not be direct deposited. This will happen if you had your tax preparation fees automatically deducted from your return. The stimulus payment calendar went according to the last two digits of your social security number and all stimulus payments for 2008 should have already been completed.
