65Can I Deduct My Moving Expenses on Income Taxes?
Most taxpayers are able to deduct some of their moving expenses if they meet certain qualifications. If you have to recently relocated to take a new job or if you have moved to a different city to look for work then you may be able to claim a tax deduction for moving expenses.
Some of the following may be deducted as moving expenses:
-
Packing & shipping Costs
-
Travel Costs
-
Lodging Costs
It is important to remember that you may not deduct meals as a moving expense. If your employer has reimbursed your moving expenses you may not deduct that either.
There are time and distance tests that you must meet as well. Your new employment must be at least 50 miles farther than your travel distance to your previous job. You must work at least full time for 39 weeks within a 12 month period following your move. It is a little different if you are self employed. You must work 78 weeks in the following 24 months after your move.
If you had to make a permanent move due to being in the Armed Forces than those expenses are deductible as well. There are some exceptions when qualifying for the time test. If you were not able to work all the qualified time after your move due to disability, involuntary separation, and some other items that will be considered when trying to deduct your moving expenses.
